Edgar Wright has criticized an upcoming Blu-Ray edition of “Spaced,” saying the project went ahead without the involvement of the people who made the British comedy. The release, scheduled for February 2027, also drew disappointment from fans online over its claim to have used AI to upscale the series.

Wright revealed his lack of involvement after a fan on X asked him about “Spaced: The Complete Series.” He said discovering the edition this way was “disheartening,” particularly because he had spent years pushing for the show to reach Blu-Ray. Describing the situation as “a bummer,” he added: “Not authorized by anyone involved in making the show.”

The collection’s promotional description presents it as the first Blu-Ray release of the complete series worldwide, with an upgraded 4K master. It says the conversion combines traditional methods with proprietary tools through several stages of non-commercial and algorithmic corrections. According to that description, a manual operator also enhances the material frame by frame. News of the edition follows false online rumors of a “Spaced” reboot that circulated a few months earlier.

Created by Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes, “Spaced” aired on Channel 4 between 1999 and 2001. Wright directed each of its 14 episodes. The surreal sitcom, known for rapid editing and hallucinations rooted in popular culture, helped establish Wright and stars Pegg, Nick Frost and Hynes. It retains a devoted following and is frequently ranked among Britain’s best comedies.

The story centered loosely on two Londoners in their 20s, played by Pegg and Hynes, who posed as a couple to secure an inexpensive room in a shared house. Their fellow occupants included an eccentric, frustrated painter, an army enthusiast and a chain-smoking landlady. The show’s international audience expanded as Wright, Pegg and Frost went on to collaborate on “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and “The World’s End.”

Earlier home releases had involved the creative team. A DVD edition issued in 2008 featured guests including Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Bill Hader, Diablo Cody, Matt Stone and Patton Oswalt. Responding to another fan who asked how the remaster could have escaped his attention, Wright said: “We were all very involved in the previous editions, but not this one.” He indicated that he was looking into what had happened.

The forthcoming edition comes from All3Media, which became part of Banijay Entertainment after their merger was completed earlier in 2026. Variety has sought comment.
