East Lansing police are investigating a series of violent incidents and traffic accidents that occurred in the vicinity of Michigan State University during the Halloween weekend. The events left five individuals shot and two pedestrians struck by vehicles. In the aftermath, local emergency services reported an exceptionally high volume of calls for assistance.
According to the East Lansing Police Department, both pedestrians who were hit by cars are currently in stable condition. In each of the two separate crash incidents, the drivers were taken into custody on suspicion of operating while intoxicated.
The first of the two shootings took place just after midnight on Sunday. Officers responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of M.A.C Avenue and Linden Street. This location is situated in a densely populated area for students, which includes several sorority houses.
Later in the night, a second shooting was reported near Stoddard Avenue and Frye Street. This site is also close to Grand River Avenue, a well-known area for off-campus student housing. Two people sustained gunshot wounds in this incident, and medical personnel expect both victims to recover fully.
Investigators recovered multiple firearms at the scenes. Several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the events, although authorities have not yet provided a detailed timeline of the specific circumstances leading up to the gunfire.
Emergency responders described the night as an all-hands-on-deck situation. The East Lansing Fire Department reported responding to a total of 91 incidents within a 24-hour period. Chief Jennifer Brown of the East Lansing Police Department highlighted that 75 of these incidents occurred overnight, contributing to the strain on first responders.
Despite the multiple arrests and the recovery of weapons, police stated they were unable to answer further questions regarding the exact motives or causes behind the shootings. Officials indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.
The cluster of incidents has raised concerns among the student population and local residents given the proximity of the events to popular housing areas. The department continues to gather evidence and review surveillance footage to piece together the sequence of events.
Local news outlets, including 7 News Detroit, are monitoring the situation and plan to provide additional details as they become available from the East Lansing Police Department. The focus remains on determining if the two shootings are connected or if they represent separate incidents that coincided on a particularly busy holiday weekend.
