Dark Sky Films has finalized the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights for American Dollhouse, a horror thriller written and directed by John Valley. The company intends to bring the film to theaters across the country in January 2027. The title previously held its world premiere at the South by Southwest film festival earlier this year.
The domestic deal was negotiated by Greg Newman, who serves as executive vice president at Dark Sky Films. He worked directly with Mike Chapman from Blue Finch Films, the company responsible for the film's international sales. Newman expressed enthusiasm for the project, describing Valley as a new voice in the horror genre whose talent and vision immediately caught the label's attention.
In addition to the U.S. agreement, Blue Finch Films has closed a deal for Canadian rights with Vortex Media. The sales team plans to present the title to additional buyers during the American Film Market in Los Angeles next week. This market activity aims to expand the film's reach further within North America and potentially other international territories.
The narrative of American Dollhouse centers on a character named Sarah. After inheriting her childhood home, she finds herself stalked by a neighbor. The neighbor's obsession with Sarah escalates, eventually turning violent. The film explores the psychological tensions that arise from these close quarters and personal histories.
Hailley Lauren, known for her role in My Stretch of Texas Ground, takes on the leading role. She is joined in the cast by Kelsey Pribilski, who appeared in Man Finds Tape, as well as Tinus Seaux, Danielle Evon Ploeger, and Richard C. Jones. The production team included David Axe, Samuel Butler, and Shane Greb. Roosevelt Film Lab's Christian Sosa and Jon Wroblewski also served as producers on the project.
Writer-director Valley provided a statement outlining the thematic core of the movie. He stated that he wanted to create a story that deconstructs the false narratives people tell themselves about home and family. Valley noted that this deconstruction takes place within the context of a blood-soaked genre film. He described the partnership with Dark Sky Films as an incredible opportunity to share this nightmare of a ride with horror fans across North America.
Dark Sky Films operates as the genre label of MPI Media Group, which is owned by Badie and Hamza Ali. The company's library features several well-known horror titles, including the classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The label has also produced films in-house, such as The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, both directed by Ti West.
The company's catalog also includes horror comedies. Notable examples include We Are Still Here, directed by Ted Geoghegan, and Let's Start A Cult, directed by Ben Kitnick. These acquisitions and productions demonstrate the label's continued commitment to diverse voices within the horror genre.
The release of American Dollhouse marks another addition to Dark Sky's growing slate of genre films. The January 2027 window will allow the studio to position the film for a significant theatrical run. Industry observers will watch to see how the film performs in the competitive holiday and early winter release season.
With the U.S. and Canadian rights secured, the distribution strategy for American Dollhouse is now fully formed for North America. The upcoming American Film Market will be the next key step for the film as Blue Finch Films continues to shop the title to international buyers. The combination of a strong cast and a distinctive thematic approach positions the film as a notable entry in the current horror landscape.
