Manchester United suffered a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, October 31, extending their winless run to nine games and increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick. The result left United only one point clear of the relegation zone, with the possibility of dropping into the bottom three before the weekend was over.
Carrick had been retained after the previous weekend's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, despite widespread expectations that he would be dismissed. His team created several opportunities in the first half at Stamford Bridge but failed to convert them, allowing Chelsea to take control after the interval.
Captain Bruno Fernandes returned to the starting lineup after being omitted against Bournemouth. His absence had followed criticism of Carrick's tactics during United's 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como. Fernandes shot over from a Bryan Mbeumo cross, while Mbeumo later failed to reach the captain's delivery at the far post. Chelsea's stand-in goalkeeper Mike Penders also stopped Amad Diallo twice. Matheus Cunha then put the ball into the net from Harry Maguire's header following a corner, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Morgan Rogers broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. The England international, who credits Carrick with helping revive his career when they worked together at Middlesbrough, collected possession inside the centre circle. He advanced through United's defence before lifting his finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United's prospects deteriorated further when Martinez received two yellow cards in quick succession. The defender was first penalised for pulling Rogers back. From the ensuing free-kick, he collided with Wesley Fofana with a raised forearm. Following a VAR review, referee Peter Banks awarded Chelsea a penalty and issued Martinez's second booking. Lammens got his hands to Cole Palmer's spot-kick but could not prevent it from rolling into the bottom corner.
Estevao, making a rare start under Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, subsequently struck Palmer's pass into the top corner, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Chelsea remained in control during the closing quarter without extending their advantage, while home supporters chanted about Carrick losing his job.
United's leadership now faces another decision over the manager before Tuesday's Champions League home meeting with Roma. Having lost two of their opening three European matches, United risk an early exit and its accompanying financial consequences if they suffer another defeat at Old Trafford.
