Compton captured the inaugural Hub City League football championship last week by beating Centennial 47-6, ending a league title drought that dated to its 1979 Moore League championship. The Tarbabes finished league play unbeaten at 4-0 and stand at 9-1 overall. Across games against Dominguez, Compton Early College, Cabrillo and Centennial, they held a combined scoring advantage of 183-26. Compton has a bye this week before the CIF-SS playoffs and will learn its opening opponent when pairings are announced Sunday at 10 a.m.
Long Beach Poly also secured championship honors last week, clinching at least a share of its first Moore League title since 2023 with a 42-0 victory at Millikan. The Jackrabbits are 5-4 overall and 3-0 in league competition, having scored 141 points without allowing any against their three league opponents. A Friday win over Jordan, which is 0-9 overall and 0-3 in league play, would give Poly the outright championship.
The Moore League’s second automatic playoff berth remains unsettled. Millikan, 2-7 overall and 2-1 in league play, can take it by defeating Wilson on Friday. Wilson enters at 2-7 and 1-2. A Bruins victory would leave Wilson, Millikan and Lakewood tied for second, requiring a coin flip because each team would be 1-1 against the other two.
Friday’s Gateway League championship matchup brings La Serna to Downey with both teams unbeaten at 4-0 in league play and already assured of automatic playoff berths. Downey is 6-3 overall, while La Serna is 8-1. Their results against the same four league opponents have been similar: Downey outscored Mayfair, Warren, La Mirada and Cerritos 179-50, compared with La Serna’s 182-43 margin.
In the Mid-Cities League, Paramount can earn its first championship since 2024 by winning at Norwalk on Friday. Under first-year coach Malik James, Paramount has gone 8-1 overall and 4-0 in league games, while Norwalk is 1-8 and 0-4. Paramount junior receiver Mylan Williams, listed at 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, received his first four Division I offers during the past week, from Washington, North Carolina, Oregon State and UCLA.
Second place in the Mid-Cities League will be contested Thursday when Bellflower hosts Gahr. Both are 3-1 in league play, with Bellflower 6-3 overall and Gahr 6-2-1. Bellflower quarterback E’Lacion Saxton passed for 441 yards and six touchdowns in last week’s 45-6 win over Norwalk, including four touchdown passes to freshman Keondre Smith. Gahr’s 40-32 victory over Santa Fee featured a 99-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Branden Martinez.
Artesia moved alone into first place in the Rio Vista League by defeating Whittier 34-14 last week. Now 7-1 overall and 4-0 in league play, Artesia can clinch the outright title Friday at home against Lynwood, which is 4-5 and 1-3. First-year coach EJ Ashby’s team has outscored league opponents 183-14, with junior Justin Pettus leading its rushing attack at 847 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Valley Christian secured a playoff berth with a 55-50 Ironwood League victory over Western Christian last week. Senior quarterback Graham Lunzer completed 13 of 22 passes for 368 yards and five touchdowns, adding 162 rushing yards and three scores on 20 carries. The defending CIF-SS Division 9 champions, now 6-2-1 overall and 3-1 in league play, finish their league schedule Friday at home against Heritage Christian, which is 5-4 and 2-2.
