Philadelphia 76ers forward Jaylen Brown has identified an antique harp as his most prized possession, a preference that stands out given his status as one of the highest-paid athletes in basketball history. Three years ago, Brown signed what was then the largest contract in NBA history, yet he values a golden harp located in his Boston apartment above his other acquisitions.

During an interview with Atlanta rapper Lil Baby last month, Brown described the instrument as his "best" and "most favorite purchase." He expanded on this sentiment in a feature published Monday in Architectural Digest, where he gave readers a detailed tour of his living space. While tunes from the harp played in the background during the shoot, Brown explained that the instrument dates back to the 18th century.

Although the harp is an antique, Brown noted that it has been reimagined for his collection. It is currently considered one of the most expensive pieces of furniture in the apartment. The musician credited his personal harpist, Li Shan Tan, with helping him maintain a sense of peace. Tan serves as the principal harpist for the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and Brown described her as an amazing therapist who helps him relax.

Brown shared that the harp is a central part of his social life in Boston. He recalled a specific memory of being in his late twenties, playing the instrument in his unit during the late-night hours from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. He added that, most of the time, he uses the harp with only his chef present, creating an intimate atmosphere that contrasts with the high energy of his professional career.

Even when Tan is not available, Brown occasionally attempts to play the instrument himself. He admitted to trying to recreate specific sounds on his own, suggesting a personal connection to the music that goes beyond simply listening to it. This hands-on approach highlights his appreciation for the craft and history embedded in the object.

The 76ers acquired Brown during the recent offseason in a significant trade with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics, who originally selected Brown with the third overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft, sent him to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, and two second-round selections in 2028 and 2030. Brown spent ten seasons with Boston, including winning a championship in 2024.

Despite his new role in Philadelphia, Brown expressed a deep emotional connection to his time in Boston. He stated that he lived and developed as a young man in the city from the age of 19 to 29. He emphasized that while he has lived in other places, his Boston apartment felt the most like home because it was created according to his own vision and crafted by his standards.

Brown is preparing to face his former team in an upcoming matchup. The 76ers will host the Boston Celtics on November 10 in Philadelphia. This game marks his first return to face the franchise that drafted him, adding a layer of nostalgia to the competitive event. The interview provides a glimpse into the personal side of the athlete beyond the court.
