The Kansas City Current are moving on to the NWSL semifinals after a 1-0 extra-time victory over Angel City in a quarterfinal at CPKC Stadium on Saturday. Michelle Cooper converted a penalty kick to decide a match that had been scoreless through regulation, bringing an end to Angel City's 10-game unbeaten run.

The scoreline was a surprise given the attacking pedigree on the field. The two clubs had tied for the most goals in the 2026 regular season with 54 each, yet the quarterfinal quickly developed into a defensive contest that appeared headed for a penalty shootout. Instead, a rare penalty call against Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson for a pushing foul on a set piece delivery from Izzy Rodriguez gave Cooper her moment, and she finished the chance five minutes into extra time.

The win carried extra weight for Kansas City, last year's NWSL Shield winners, whose previous campaign ended with a home playoff loss to Gotham. This time the Current extended their unbeaten streak at CPKC Stadium to 16 matches and banished some of those postseason memories.

Regulation offered few clear chances despite the pregame expectations of an open game. One of Kansas City's better looks of the first half came inside 20 minutes, when Haley Hopkins, Temwa Chawinga and Cooper combined for a header that went straight to Anderson. Current goalkeeper Lorena answered with a key save of her own shortly after. "It was definitely a team effort. They played a lot of long balls, so winning the second ball was key for us," Current center back Gabrielle Robinson said of the defensive performance.

Angel City arrived as one of the playoff's compelling stories after a midseason turnaround. The club named Leif Gunnar Smerud interim head coach after parting ways with Alexander Straus, acquired Ally Sentnor in a summer trade with Kansas City, and welcomed back defender Savy King from injury, a move that shifted Gisele Thompson into a wide midfield role. Captain Sarah Gorden raised her level next to center back Emily Sams, and left back Evelyn Shores led the team with eight assists. Angel City had beaten Kansas City earlier in the regular season and drawn 1-1 at CPKC Stadium in August, and Anderson kept the Current off the board in regulation with a massive stoppage-time save.

Current manager Chris Armas opened his postgame remarks by praising the visitors. "I want to congratulate Angel City on a great season. And it's a shame that one of us on the day was not going to move on. But they're a tough team," he said, adding of Smerud, "I think he did a great job this season taking over, and they have a lot to be proud of."

Set pieces defined much of the match, with Kansas City earning eight corners and Angel City 11, as Angel City midfielder Ary Borges and Current center back Kayla Sharples frequently battled for position in the box. It was on one of those deliveries that the decisive penalty was awarded and confirmed after a quick check.

Cooper stepping to the spot was notable because captain Lo'eau LaBonta is typically the team's penalty taker. Armas said the plan had been made in advance. "We knew Coop would take it, and she buried it," he said, noting LaBonta would have taken one had the match reached a shootout.

For Cooper, the goal was a measure of redemption after she missed last year's quarterfinal exit with a lingering foot injury. "To be able to actually impact the game in a way of scoring a goal in the PK, and converting, it's felt really good. But I think, I can't celebrate yet. We still have two more games to go," she said. "I think this team this year has taken things personal and never-say-die, and that's kind of the mentality that we've been going with."

Kansas City will face the winner of Sunday's quarterfinal between Gotham FC and the Seattle Reign. The NWSL semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 14 and 15.
