Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker drew attention Friday when he discussed trade speculation while dressed in a Halloween costume. The unusual setting for questions about his future quickly went viral, putting a seasonal tradition alongside uncertainty about whether he will remain with the team as the NFL trade deadline approaches.
Baker has worn a costume to practice around Halloween for several years and kept that custom going on October 30. His outfit provided the striking feature of a media appearance in which his response to questions about his status was otherwise straightforward: his attention remained on the work immediately ahead.
“I just live in the present,” Baker said. He described enjoying his time with reporters and said his priorities were having a good Friday practice and preparing to face the Dallas Cowboys. He also made clear that the aim for that matchup was to earn a victory at Dallas' stadium.
The exchange came with Arizona at 2-5, a record that provides context for the speculation surrounding one of its most accomplished players. Teams struggling through a season often consider moving established veterans before the deadline to obtain draft picks for the future. A Baker trade could bring the Cardinals a substantial return.
Such a move would also mean parting with a player whose entire NFL career has been spent in Arizona. Baker is midway through his 10th season with the Cardinals and has earned eight Pro Bowl selections, including one in each of the past seven years. He is also a two-time All-Pro.
That record has made Baker one of the franchise's greatest players, and his departure would likely disappoint many Arizona supporters. The potential value of a trade therefore sits alongside his longstanding place within the team. At 30, he remains a veteran for whom Arizona would need to receive an attractive offer.
A departure is not certain. Questions about Baker's future with the Cardinals have surfaced before, and he subsequently signed a lucrative long-term contract with the club. Arizona has until November 10 at 4 p.m. ET to complete a trade this season.
For now, Baker remains with the Cardinals, and his Friday appearance gave little indication that the speculation was troubling him. With the deadline still ahead, his stated focus was practice and the opportunity to help Arizona win against the Cowboys.
