At least six people were killed and dozens more injured in a series of mass shootings that occurred over the recent Halloween weekend. The incidents were primarily concentrated in nightlife districts across the United States, with officials reporting significant violence in several major metropolitan areas and college towns.
The deadliest of these events took place in Dallas, Texas. Police reported that a sequence of shootings in the Deep Ellum neighborhood, a district known for its music venues and restaurants, resulted in four deaths and 15 injuries. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux stated that investigators were working to determine if three separate shootings that happened within a span of about an hour and 15 minutes on Saturday night were connected. While some arrests were made, the chief did not specify the number of suspects or the charges involved. He described the scene as large and spread out, noting that the department had increased its police presence in the area prior to the incidents. No officers were reported injured.
In Birmingham, Alabama, two separate shootings occurred just outside Legion Field following the annual Magic City Classic football game on Saturday night. Mayor Randall Woodfin announced that one person was killed and eight others were wounded. Fire officials indicated that two of the victims were in critical condition as of Sunday. The game, a longstanding rivalry between Alabama State and Alabama A&M universities, drew nearly 70,000 fans. Police Chief Michael Pickett noted that most spectators had already left the stadium when the first shooting happened near vendor areas on Graymont Avenue. One person was detained, and multiple weapons were found, though the exact circumstances and location of the fatality remained unclear.
Similar incidents unfolded in other college towns. In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot late Saturday near the University of Delaware campus. Video footage shared on social media showed people fleeing the scene, and a section of Main Street was closed for several hours. All six victims were transported to hospitals, with their conditions initially undisclosed. In Bloomington, Illinois, a shooting early Sunday near the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University left a 19-year-old woman dead and another woman in critical condition. Six other individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries of an unknown nature.
Fayetteville, Arkansas, also experienced violence early Sunday near the University of Arkansas. Six people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds following an incident that police said was preceded by an altercation. No arrests had been made at the time of the report.
The weekend violence also extended to retail locations. On Friday, two people were killed in separate shootings at Spirit Halloween stores in California and Michigan. In Fairfield, California, police described the shooting inside the store as a targeted attack that left a 31-year-old pregnant woman dead and six others wounded. In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot on Friday afternoon. Another man who was assaulted by bystanders during his arrest was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The report was filed by John Raby from Charleston, West Virginia, with additional contributions from AP reporter Claudia Lauer in Philadelphia.
