A man was found dead and a woman was injured after a fire broke out Monday morning, Nov. 2, at a home in central Everett. Firefighters responded to the residence in the 7300 block of McDougall Avenue after several people called 911 to report smoke and flames coming from the house, according to a press release.
Before reaching the scene, firefighters received an initial report that someone remained inside the residence. Arriving crews found a fire burning on the lower level of the split-level home. The release described difficult fire conditions that complicated both the effort to search the house and the work to extinguish the flames.
First responders discovered a man dead inside the home during the response. He was believed to be in his late 30s, according to the release. His official identification will be determined by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office, which will also determine the cause and manner of his death.
A woman in her early 60s suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation. Paramedics from South County Fire took her to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett for treatment. She was the other person reported injured in the fire, while the man was found deceased inside the residence.
Crews brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes, the release said. The response involved searching the home and fighting the active fire under conditions that the release said made both operations challenging. The fire’s origin and cause remain under investigation by the Everett Fire Marshal’s Office.
Family members met with social workers from the city of Everett’s CARE team following the fire. The team offered support, assistance and resources, according to the release. It is also in contact with the American Red Cross to coordinate any further assistance for the family.
The investigation includes separate responsibilities for fire officials, police and the medical examiner. While the Fire Marshal’s Office works to establish where and how the fire began, the medical examiner will make the official determinations concerning the man who died.
Everett police are also conducting a death investigation. The release described that inquiry as standard procedure after a fatal fire.
