Gotham FC won their first NWSL Shield with a 2-0 home victory over Utah Royals as the 2026 regular season concluded with all 16 clubs playing simultaneously. San Diego Wave finished second after beating Bay FC 1-0, while Seattle Reign claimed the last available playoff place with a 1-0 win over Orlando Pride. The final round also determined home-field advantages for the postseason.

A draw would have been enough for Gotham to secure the Shield, awarded to the team with the most points, but they took all three at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Midge Purce helped drive their early attack, finding space to deliver a cross to Guro Reiten. Jaedyn Shaw later came off the bench to score the final goal. After previously winning NWSL Championships as the eighth seed, Gotham will enter this postseason in the top position.

The Shield race lasted until the final day despite Gotham holding a substantial points advantage in late summer. Injuries, roster rotation and inconsistent results allowed their challengers to remain involved during the league's first 30-match season. Washington Spirit stayed in contention through the penultimate round, and San Diego still had a chance entering the finale. The Wave's victory at Bay FC ultimately could not change the order at the top.

Gotham welcomed Shaw and Rose Lavelle back from injuries, but another fitness concern emerged when midfielder Jaelin Howell left in the first half with a right ankle injury. Howell, one of the team's leaders in minutes played, will be evaluated closer to the quarterfinals. Defender Bruninha and rookie forward Jordynn Dudley have recently sustained season-ending injuries, testing a squad that has relied on its depth throughout the campaign.

Seattle entered the final round able to secure eighth place with a victory. North Carolina Courage and Denver Summit also remained in contention, but each needed to beat the other and have Orlando defeat the Reign. Seattle settled the matter through center back Jordyn Bugg, who finished a set piece involving two flicks shortly after the hour mark. The victory came as the club honored longtime veteran Jess Fishlock.

Washington and Kansas City Current secured home quarterfinals with matching 2-0 victories over Chicago Stars and Racing Louisville, respectively. Elsewhere, Angel City defeated Boston Legacy 4-1, North Carolina beat Denver 1-0, and Portland Thorns overcame Houston Dash 2-0. San Diego, Angel City and Kansas City head into the playoffs unbeaten in five matches, with the Current having won all five.

The quarterfinals begin Nov. 6 with San Diego hosting Utah. Kansas City face Angel City on Nov. 7, followed by Gotham against Seattle and Washington against Portland on Nov. 8. As the top two seeds, Gotham and San Diego will also host semifinals if they advance from the opening round.

The postseason will conclude with the NWSL Championship on Nov. 21. CBS will broadcast the title game.
