Gotham FC captured their first NWSL Shield with a 2-0 victory over the Utah Royals on Sunday at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. Guro Reiten scored early before Jaedyn Shaw added a late goal, securing a result that kept Gotham ahead of the San Diego Wave at the top of the standings.
A draw would have been enough for Gotham to clinch the Shield, but their club-record 18th win of the season left them three points clear of San Diego, who also won Sunday. Gotham became the seventh franchise to win the trophy. All eight matches on Decision Day began at the same time, with the Shield, the remaining playoff place and postseason seeding still to be settled.
For goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, the achievement reflected the level Gotham should expect from their squad. She said the team had fallen short of its potential during last season's league campaign, despite subsequently winning the championship. Berger also challenged the underdog label attached to that playoff run, saying Gotham had demonstrated over time that they belonged at the top.
Gotham have won two of the past three NWSL Championships, entering both successful postseason campaigns as the lowest playoff seed. Last year, they qualified eighth and eliminated Shield winners Kansas City Current in the quarterfinals on their way to the title. Under coach Juan Carlos Amoros, Gotham have reached the playoffs in four consecutive seasons and won championships in 2023 and 2025.
Amoros noted that Gotham now hold all three NWSL trophies for at least a week, with the Shield joining June's Challenge Cup and the 2025 championship. Defender and co-captain Tierna Davidson credited the entire roster for navigating a demanding season that began with preseason on Jan. 2. She praised the players' resilience through a long year involving matches in several countries, while emphasizing that their work was not finished.
Gotham have played more matches than any other NWSL side this season. Their schedule included January's inaugural FIFA Women's Champions Cup in England, where they represented Concacaf as the region's 2025 champions. They also competed in the 2026 Concacaf semifinal and third-place match in May before playing in the Challenge Cup in June.
Their playoff campaign begins at home against Seattle Reign FC on Nov. 8 at noon ET. Seattle secured the eighth and final seed by beating Orlando Pride 1-0 on Sunday. The winner will face either fourth-seeded Kansas City Current or fifth-seeded Angel City FC. Second-seeded San Diego host seventh-seeded Utah on Friday, while third-seeded Washington Spirit host sixth-seeded Portland Thorns on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
Gotham will seek a double achieved only three times across 12 NWSL seasons. North Carolina Courage won both the Shield and championship in 2018 and 2019, followed by Orlando in 2024. This year's championship match is scheduled for Nov. 21 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
