The NWSL Shield and the last available playoff berth will be decided on Sunday, Nov. 1, as the regular season concludes. Gotham FC enter Decision Day with a three-point advantage over the San Diego Wave, while the Seattle Reign hold the final postseason position ahead of the North Carolina Courage and Denver Summit. All eight matches are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. ET.

Gotham can claim their first Shield with a draw against the Utah Royals, regardless of San Diego's result away at Bay FC. Their lead stood at seven points in late summer, but uneven results in the closing months have kept the title race open. The Wave's pursuit suffered a setback with a draw against the Boston Legacy last week.

The availability of Jaedyn Shaw and Rose Lavelle remains a question for Gotham with the playoffs a week away. Both missed the team's 2-1 victory at the Orlando Pride last week, and Shaw was an unused substitute in the preceding 1-0 defeat at the Washington Spirit. Together, they have delivered 22 goal contributions this season. Shaw has been especially influential as both a scorer and creator, with Gotham's attacking production falling considerably in her absence. Utah have already qualified for the playoffs but bring a middling defensive record into Sunday's match.

Seven of the eight postseason places are already filled. Seattle occupy eighth with 42 points and can secure the remaining berth by beating Orlando, whose playoff hopes have already ended. North Carolina sit two points behind the Reign, with Denver another point back. The Courage and Summit meet on Sunday, leaving both dependent on Seattle's result.

North Carolina must win and have Seattle drop points to reach the playoffs. Denver need a victory coupled with a Reign defeat to qualify in their inaugural season. Seattle's defense has been central to their position, allowing 33 goals against an expected goals against figure of 39.96. Denver, meanwhile, have gained momentum from Lindsey Heaps, who has recorded seven goals and three assists since arriving at midseason.

For North Carolina's Ashley Sanchez, the finale also offers an opportunity to establish two league records. She has scored 20 goals this season and would set the NWSL single-season scoring record with a goal against Denver. Either a goal or an assist would move her beyond Temwa Chawinga's single-season record for goal contributions.

Sanchez's move to the left wing has transformed her season, helping her return to the national team and enter consideration for next summer's Women's World Cup roster. Her production has also made her a prominent MVP contender, although even another decisive performance would leave North Carolina relying on help from Orlando.

The Courage's wider difficulties explain that uncertainty. Sanchez has contributed to nearly half of their goals, while the team rank among the league's bottom six for goals conceded. Sunday's results will determine whether her exceptional individual campaign continues into the postseason or ends with North Carolina outside the playoff field.
