Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is at risk of missing more than one game. Already ruled out for Sunday's matchup against the Arizona Cardinals with a quad injury and a cracked rib, Darnold is also in jeopardy of sitting out the team's Week 10 game against the Raiders, league sources told ESPN.
Darnold could try to suit up for next Sunday's game in Las Vegas, but the Seahawks are mindful that their bye week follows immediately afterward. Sitting out the next two contests would give the quarterback three full weeks to recover before Seattle faces a pivotal divisional test in Week 12 on the road against the San Francisco 49ers.
The rib injury occurred on just the second play of Monday night's loss to the Chicago Bears. Darnold played through significant pain for the remainder of that game before also injuring his quad later in the contest.
While the team officially ruled him out for Sunday because of the quad issue, sources said the cracked rib suffered by the Super Bowl-winning quarterback also played a role in the decision.
Seattle's offense has not lost much production when Drew Lock has stepped in for Darnold, who has dealt with multiple injuries this season. Darnold previously missed the Week 2 game against Arizona after suffering a glute and hip injury in the first quarter of the season opener against the New England Patriots.
Lock performed well in that Week 2 victory over the Cardinals, completing 73.1% of his passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns. He is set to start against Arizona again on Sunday, even though he has been managing a right elbow injury that left him inactive for the past two games and limited his throwing in recent weeks.
Lock was listed as a limited participant in Friday's practice, a designation he has carried on all 12 of Seattle's injury reports since the start of Week 6. Head coach Mike Macdonald said Friday that the team managed Lock's practice reps, describing the approach as "more precautionary than anything else."
Macdonald also said last week that Jalen Milroe needs to prepare as if he could be called upon. Milroe has not appeared in a regular-season game since Week 5 of last year, but Seattle wants him ready in case the team must turn to a third quarterback against the Cardinals.
