Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards is set to have an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee and is expected to be out for as long as two months, according to sources who spoke with ESPN's Shams Charania.

The news arrives shortly after one of the most productive stretches of Edwards' career. On Monday, despite being listed as questionable on the injury report for the second game of a back-to-back, he played a season-high 41 minutes at Cleveland and scored 47 points. The Timberwolves lost to the Cavaliers 127-125 in overtime.

Edwards was cleared to play following pregame warmups in Cleveland. The performance was his second 45-point game of the season, which made him the fourth player in NBA history to record multiple 45-point outings in his team's first four games.

The knee first became an issue Sunday, when Edwards was seen grabbing it during Minnesota's home-opening win over the Toronto Raptors. That landed him on the injury report. Before the Cleveland game, coach Chris Finch described the situation as a "daily situation" and said he was not concerned about it becoming a long-term problem.

The right knee has a history. Edwards dealt with runner's knee in that same leg last season and missed nine of the Timberwolves' final 22 regular-season games while managing it. He later hyperextended his left knee during the team's first-round playoff series.

Edwards said during the preseason that he took time off over the summer to let his knees heal. He had not reported any knee problems during training camp.

He missed 21 games last year, the most of his career, but Minnesota held up in his absence with a 12-9 record in those contests.

Before the injury news, Edwards was having the best start of his career. Through four games he averaged 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 48% from the field. His scoring average ranked second in the league behind Luka Doncic's 34.3.

The Timberwolves, now 3-1, host the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night.
